Hello Bat Friends!

Jambo! Welcome to our Nature Trail! My name is Said Juma, I’m the Chief Forest Officer on Pemba Island. This is a blog about our wonderful island in Tanzania, its people, their culture and their conservation efforts. And of course the Pemba Flying Foxes that the community’s has been protecting and monitoring. The Pemba Flying Fox is a fruit bat endemic to Pemba. The bat was listed as critically endangered until earlier this year when and it moved to the status of ‘vulnerable’ by the IUCN. I will tell you more about how the community successfully brought this species back from the brink of extinction in this blog!
The Pemba people are warm who have a committed themselves to protecting their Island. So far, they have been actively involved in protecting the two remaining tracts of forests on the Island that the bats depend on and that were threatened by clove plantations. The community actively guards the forest and is eradicating an invasive species known as Maesospsi eminii which hinders the growth of other indigenous species. Karibu to our news!

Said — I am very excited about this blog…I recently have become enamored with bats in trying to understand the ones that fly around my property (particularly the pool at dusk!). In the process of my “research” I have found that bats are lovely little creatures that are greatly misunderstood…so, welcome and I look forward to hearing about (and seeing) your flying foxes!
